Chilled Success at Whangarei ANZ Branch

Challenge

The Whangarei ANZ Branch faced significant operational challenges when their ageing water chiller failed, leaving the Branch without a functioning air conditioning system in the peak of summer. Given the critical nature of the cooling system for the branch’s operations, a prompt replacement was necessary to minimise an already lengthy disruption. Faced with a distraught tenant the building owner contacted Chilltech to provide a solution.

Solution

To address the issue, the proposal involved replacing the old chiller with a new Carrier Aquasnap 30RB-160R chiller. This required a comprehensive approach, beginning with the disconnection and removal of the existing chiller from the chilled water system and electrical connections. An after-hours crane lift, involving a 50-tonne crane, road closure and traffic management, was necessary to safely position the new unit in place. The installation also included replacing the above roof section of pipework with new PE SDR11 electrofusion pipework, ensuring long-term reliability. To optimise system performance, new isolation valves, strainers, and associated components were also installed. Following the installation, the entire system was commissioned to ensure efficiency and optimal performance. Throughout the process ANZ Branch management and the building owner were kept up to date through regular communication and updates. While onsite water proofing issues with the Butanol plant platform and roof access hatch were also addressed providing the building owner with peace of mind moving forward.

Outcome

The replacement of the chiller was completed successfully with minimal disruption to the branch’s operations, providing the Whangarei ANZ Branch with a modern, energy-efficient cooling solution with significantly improved energy efficiency. The upgraded infrastructure has enhanced overall system reliability, ensuring that the building maintains optimal comfort for its occupants. The project was completed on time and within budget, delivering lasting benefits to the client.
